Beyond The Bars: The Zoo Dilemma Book

In 1984 Zoo Check was born. In 1991 it evolved into what we all know and love as the Born Free Foundation, its mission was simple; to support all wild animals and to question the justifications for keeping wild animals in zoos while exploring new thinking.

Written in 1987, the Beyond The Bars book is a superb study of the world’s view at the time and features a collection of essays written by leading conservationists, writers, philosophers, and campaigners of the time, including Richard Adams, Mary Midgley, Billy Arjan Singh, Hugo van Lawick, Spike Milligan and, of course, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers.

To commemorate the 30 years since the Born Free book’s inception and the philosophy underpinning it, this hardback book has been reprinted, with a new foreword by Virginia McKenna, a new chapter by Born Free's Head of Animal Welfare & Captivity, Dr Chris Draper, and a new afterword by Born Free's President & Co-Founder, Will Travers.

This Born Free book is a fascinating read and raises many profound and important questions about our relationship with the natural world and the individual wild animals we share it with.

Every year, Born Free rescues and protects thousands of animals around the world. Whether this is funding anti-poaching patrols, key research initiatives or providing lifetime care for rescued animals, the money raised from our store funds key work and helps to provide a better future for wildlife. Money from your purchase will be used to directly fund the care and/or protection of many animals, as well as to fund other key Born Free initiatives and projects. So, from all of us here at the Born Free Foundation, we would like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Without people like you, we wouldn’t be able to carry out the crucial and important work that we do. If you have any questions regarding your purchase, please do not hesitate to contact us

How Else Can You Help?

Sending us used postage stamps is a great way for us to raise extra money for wildlife. Born Free Foundation works with a stamp dealer who operates with various charities, receiving stamps. We ask that you send all stamp donations directly to our dealer. We welcome all stamps, on or off paper. If possible, stamps on paper should have no more than 10mm of single thickness border around them, please do not trim them so close that the perforations are damaged. If you use High Value Commemorative Stamp(s) or Miniature Sheets (above the rate of a 1st class stamp) on your packaging we will receive an additional 50 pence per item received.
